Hohner Electra-Melodica (1966-67)
One of the most interesting instruments Hohner ever made, and arguably the first breath-controlled wind synthesiser ever produced. Only around 600 were built before it was discontinued — it was simply too far ahead of its time.
A single oscillator with six tones voiced to emulate clarinet, brass, strings, oboe/bassoon, flute and saxophone, further shaped by a bow-wow/wah-wah button with three formant settings. Five octave settings give a total range of seven octaves, vibrato with wide speed and depth adjustment, and volume controlled subtly and expressively by breath pressure.
This example is in near-perfect condition - almost new old stock. It comes complete with its original sturdy wooden case, military-style metal power pack (110-240V), 5-pin Melodica-to-power-pack cable, mouthpiece, and both the operation and service manuals. The original 3-pole DIN audio output has been sensibly updated to a standard quarter-inch jack.
All sounds are bright and clear with no hum, all switches and functions work perfectly, and there's an occasional hint of grunge that, frankly, only adds to the charm.
